UNIX Data Protection

     Benefits
  • Increased control and flexibility of the backup process
  • Centralized production of Data Vaulting copies
  • Facilitated identification of applications synch points

    The problem
Problems became more evident as the volume of data handled increased, making it difficult to maintain even the most basic disaster recovery operations. Furthermore these applications needed to exchange data. Common points between the applications needed to be defined and established. These commonalities were not always easy to identify because of the increase in the time it takes to store the data itself.

    Customer

In the world of telecommunications, our client has a very high relevance.
Its network is the most advanced with over 26 million connections. This is a service that runs 24/7. This is a detail that users often take for granted. This is why each of our client’s actions is based on reliability and security.

When handling your core business, the choice of technical solutions requires extreme care, especially when entrusting data storage and management to outside specialists

The environment is complex: Over 38 different applications, each application using up space on the server and coexisting with various operating systems, each one having its own backup system for a total of approx. 300 Unix nodes.

    Solution

Basing ourselves on the level of importance of each application, we implemented over 300 backup sessions, storing 45 terabytes of data without interrupting the 50 Oracle instances involved.
Resources from project management and from Integra’s system consultants were retained to coordinate and implement all the phases according to the architectural plan submitted and approved.

Once the individual components (SW, libraries and directors) were installed and formatted, Point in Time Copy procedures were identified and implemented for the mounting/dismounting of all existing heterogeneous platforms.
Backup plans were left to the various persons responsible for those applications for testing and verification certification. This data protection solution gives the client accurate control and an increased flexibility with regards to the variations of elements to be stored.

By having a single point of management, the duplication of data (data vaulting) in the first step of the disaster recover plan is simplified. Thanks to the resizing of the temporary storage windows, it is easier to identify commonalities with easier integration of the new application.
